Admiralty law or Maritime law is a distinct body of general law, which governs both domestic law, governing maritime activities and private international law governing the relationships between private entities, which operate vessels on the oceans. Ships may be arrested to obtain payment for first preferred ship’s mortgages, crew wages, dockage, ship repair charges, ship’s chandlers bills, and other vessel expenses.

The insurer must pay to the insured the sum of the contribution of the insured goods to joint losses whether the adjustment of these losses is provisional or final as well as the expenses of assistance and salvage according to the value insured with him, minus (when necessary), the particular average losses borne by the insurer.
